Chapter Eight

Logan Wells had accepted his offered match.

Shae stomped her feet under the desk and squeezed her eyes closed and squealed with excitement. Yes, yes, yes!

He was her first hyena shifter match, and Isa had given her the go-ahead to take this match completely on her own, and she was really doing it!

She’d worked years to get to here—where Isa trusted her enough to do match-offers—and now Logan was really going for it. He was really going for it. Wow. Heart racing, Shae leaned back in her chair and imagined the possibilities for him and Sabrina Hollins, a shy crow shifter who had met all of his match criteria. Maybe, just maybe, they would fall in love, and their animals would choose each other, and they would go to contract and live happily ever after.

The money was fine and all, but Shae lived for the love part of this. When couples matched up and worked out, it gave her this bone-deep sense of accomplishment, like she was a part of putting good into the world.

She couldn’t name a more fulfilling job.

The front door opened and Isa walked in, looking hungover as hell.

“Fun night last night?” Shae teased.

“Not at all,” Isa murmured, leaving her sunglasses on as she made her way back to her office.

Shae didn’t miss the snarling in her boss’s chest, or the scent of riled-up werewolf.

She stood and pushed her rolling office chair out of the way, then followed her friend into her office. “Hey, are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” The growling got louder.

Isa knelt by a trio of boxes she had yet to unpack, and pushed her sunglasses up to her hair. When she glanced over at Shae, her eyes were too bright.

“Hey,” Shae murmured, kneeling down. “What’s wrong? Is it Stryker?”

“He’s fine.”

“Are the two of you fine?” she asked, digging because she wanted to know where to start with being there for her boss who had turned into a friend.

Isa rubbed her eyes and dug through the first box. She hadn’t even asked what the itinerary was for today, and she was two hours late for work. Something was wrong.

Shae squatted down and exposed her neck. “Isa,” she said softly.

With a sigh, Isa removed her sunglasses completely and rubbed her eyes. “It’s not Stryker. I love him and I’m ridiculously happy. I’ve just had this damn headache for two straight days. I can’t sleep, and it’s not getting better. And it keeps making me Change. I’ve Changed on accident the last three nights. I think Stryker’s giving us all headaches on accident. He doesn’t know how to control it.” Isa gave her a helpless look. “I can barely see straight, and it feels like the wolf is right on the surface always.”

“Oh shit,” she murmured. “Have you talked to Stryker about it?”

“Of course. We all have. He doesn’t know how to stop, and it’s crippling the entire Pack.”

“Wait, everyone?”

“Yeah. Everyone but Flex. Flex distanced himself a few weeks ago though, and barely has a bond to the Pack, so Stryker can’t reach him like the others.
